Immokalee U.S.A.
(Documentary) - Every season, tens of thousands of migrant farmworkers
converge on small communities like Immokalee, Florida where they plant
and harvest the food that Americans consume. A vast majority of these
workers are undocumented, leaving them at the mercy of the large agribusinesses
who hire them, the crew leaders who contract them and the landlords
and businesses that profit from the seasonal arrival of migrant workers.
Their "undocumented" legal status allows for a system of exploitation
that leaves workers and their families to endure conditions and wages
that rarely meet international human rights standards. Immokalee U.S.A.
documents these daily experiences, leading the viewer to examine their
own role in the issues migrant workers face in the U.S.A
Electronic Transmission Process (Short) - Electronic Transmission Process
uses the found footage of a social guidance film to address the intricacies
of the nuclear family, and the portrayal of family in popular culture.
The main character finds himself in a game-show-like experiment where
he is exposed to uncomfortable situations, while the viewer is forced
to watch without resolution.
The Bionic Cowboy (Short)
- By: Gabriel Tyner
After getting hit by a train ten years earlier, Chris Wilson decides
to return to Bull Riding. His legs were cut off at the Knee and his
face was smashed but that did not stop him from getting back on a bull
in Chiefland, Florida. This courageous story follows Chris as he gets
back on a bull after 10 years in recovery. With his half million dollar
bionic legs and face Chris not only gets back on the bull once but four
times. This inspirational story teaches us that it's not how many times
you fall down, but how many times you get back up. Featuring a phenomenal
soundtrack by southern cracker blues specialists "Hamhock and Slide."
Visitation (Short) - By: Brian Reed
Visitation depicts the story of a lonely farmer (Jim Bruke) who struggles
with the loss of his wife and his own mortality. As he begins experiencing
strange phenomena, his daughter (Amanda Gulledge) becomes increasingly
concerned for his health and safety.
Appalachia in the Academy
(Documentary) - A KET independent documentary that follows
three rural Appalachian students during their first year at the University
of Kentucky. An interesting look at the impact college has on rural
students and the impressions they leave behind.
One Last Shock (Short) - One of my favorite submissions this year. One
Last Shock is to short movies as Negativ Land is to music. A cut and
splice of existing educational films, advertising and childrens entertainment
re-edited to tell a new story. I've watched this at least a dozen times
already.
Fragments from an Endless War
White Hotel
Seduction in C Sharp
(Short/Musical) - Seduction in C-Sharp is a film noir dance extravaganza
that follows one hot night in the life of Frankie Fast. Frankie is a
keen lady detective in a world full of racketeering half-wits. One quiet
Saturday evening, a notorious bookie hires her to track down Two Tone
Tony, a no-good hood up to his neck in gambling debts. The assignment
doesn’t quite tickle her fancy, but the shrewd young gumshoe realizes
that if she doesn’t get him, somebody else will.
Infiltration (Short) - Short experimental movie by Charles Chadwick
Surprise Horror Movie!!! (Horror) - I love the idea of late night movies
and people walking in with no idea of what they're about to see. This
is the entry I've been showing to all my friends because I can't get
enough of it. I would say it ranks up there with Evil Dead 2 and Shaun
of the Dead. Just be there.
Bleed
With Me (Horror from Denmark) - Laura (Camilla Metelmann) has had
the worst day of her life, everything’s gone wrong. On her way
home from work a late night she catches a taxi, not realizing the Chauffeur
(Kim Sønderholm) is about make her day a whole lot worse…
*Warning - very violent - Not for the squeamish*
That's How I'd Kill It (Short) - An Iraq war veteran
visits an estranged childhood friend, who acts like nothing between
them has changed.
Rock Paper Scissors (Short) - A one minute experimental short of sound
and music.
A Field Guide for the Modern Uncircumcised
Male (Short) - By Aaron Ross. In this society, which I am both a
product of and contributor to, the transmission of information is easier
and more abundant than ever. There remains, however, a gap in the knowledge
of men — amongst ourselves and outsiders. A Field Guide for the
Modern Uncircumcised Male addresses this gap, while also fulfilling
a role that was abandoned for adolescents of my generation to independently
rectify.
The best way I can describe this is "The Vagina
Monogloues" for uncircumcised men. It's both funny and informative.
One of the real surprises in our submission box. Don't get all weird
on me. You know you want to look.
The Wig Maker of Copenhagen (Short from France)
Synchronicity Series
(Short) - By: Eileen Anastasia Reynolds
"Synchronicity Series" is an animated pixilation shot and
performed in Little India and at The School of Art, Media, and Design
in Singapore. It is an American artist's interpretation of living as
an outsider and an "alien" in a new space. This experimental
video playfully bridges cultural boundaries by creating eye-catching
special effects with old school stop motion techniques. Watch as a posse
of white coats breezes through the city depicting the inevitability
of change and transformation.
Sprinkles - The True Story of a Dead Dog (Comedy/Short) - A woman comes
home from work to find her dog dead. Unable to remove the animal herself
she asks for help. The dead dog goes a ride wilder than any when it
was alive.
Shorts by Cory Pop (Johnny's Fifyh Birthday/Sleepwalkers Steps) - Cory
Pop is a Louisvillian, musician, and now a film student. If his early
work is any kind of indicator he's going to blow minds in the near future.
Don't miss these two shorts.
The Artists of Glassworks (Short Documentary) - Short documentary on
the artists and inspiration at Glassworks in Louisville. Beautifully
shot and inspiring. Come see what talent this city has to offer. Enter
the enchanting world of glass art through the minds of Chad Balster
and Casey Hyland, two remarkably talented yet diverse glass artists
from Louisville Glassworks. Directed by local filmmaker Brandon Maxwell,
each film is an engaging and inspiring view at the creative process
of glass blowing.
30 Century Man
(Documentary) - Last Call is truly lucky get a screening of this highly
anticipated documentary on musician Scott Walker. Just click the link
and watch the trailer.
Scott Walker: 30 Century Man is a long-overdue look
at one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in rock history. The
film explores his music and career.
He’s 63 years old and released his first album in over 10 years,
“The Drift” on 4 A.D. Records last year to wide-spread critical
acclaim. The film features exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the
making of the album as well as interviews with friends, collaborators,
and fans including, among others:
David Bowie, Radiohead, Jarvis Cocker (Pulp), Brian Eno, Damon Albarn
(Blur, Gorillaz), Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy), Marc Almond, Alison
Goldfrapp, Sting, Dot Allison, Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins), Richard
Hawley, Rob Ellis, Johnny Marr (The Smiths/Modest Mouse), Gavin Friday,
Lulu, Peter Olliff, Angela Morley, Ute Lemper, Ed Bicknell, Evan Parker,
Hector Zazou, Mo Foster, Phil Sheppard, Pete Walsh, and more.
Directed by Stephen Kijak, who brought you the delightfully deranged
documentary CINEMANIA (a profile of 5 of NYC’s most manic film
buffs), this is a different form of obsession altogether. Inspiring
god-like devotion from fans, Scott Walker’s has a cult that has
grown considerably since his 1995 release “Tilt”, a dark
and difficult masterwork. His new album takes that sound further than
anyone could have imagined…
Collaborators include acclaimed DP/Director Grant Gee (”Radiohead:
Meeting People is Easy”)
The
Adventures of Flannery (Cathal Coughlan) (Documentary) - This feature
documentary was premiered at the 2007 Cork Film festival. The corner-piece
of the film is Cathal Coughlan's live performance of his musical theatre
piece Flannery's Mounted Head. The film also takes a backward look at
the career of one of Ireland's most prolific and original song-writing
talents.
Cathal Coughlan was a member of the bands Fatima
Mansions and Micro Disney. Coughlan is an amazing musician/singer who
carries very stark imagery into his work. A great talent and a great
film sure to please current fans as well as make new ones.
Appearing Live!
The
Octopus Project!
A slightly different twist to the Last Call format.
This time I'm combining the ideas between film and music. The Octopus
Project are a fantastic band that has toured with Lolapalooza, played
SXSW, Fun Fun Fun Fest among many other tours and shows. Their song
Music Is Happiness has appeared in the movie 21. Now they have created
a whole set of visuals and have written music to play along with it.
Their live shows are always great and this should
be no exception. Do not miss them. It's not often Louisville gets to
see something this cool.
